March 11 - Kangaroo Island, Australia

Before our tour today, we tendered in to the town of Penneshaw for a look around.

We were told at the Post Office that the population is about 300 and I can believe it.  Some local crafts people set up some tents to seel their wares.  We wandered around a bit including the IGA market, always interesting.  I loved these crackers, well, the varieties anyway.  We didn't buy any to try.

Some interesting sights around.
Look for penguins AND snakes.

A nice thing being done for local firefighters and first responders.  The island was badly affected by the brush fires.

And some nice scenery.

Norfolk Pines are everywhere

Our tour was a ride around town (took about 20 minutes going very slowly).  We DID see a kangaroo, but he was so far away and in the shade of a tree, that a photo wasn't possible.  The local roos have been separated from the mainland for about 16,000 years so they have developed into a species of their own with the males larger and the females smaller than mainland roos.  Next we boarded an inflatable boat for a look for seals and dolphins.  Got some pictures which turned out OK considering the conditions.  The ocean was very calm, but those guys are very quick.

climb aboard and hang on

that shiny spot in the middle is actually the butt of a sleeping seal - very good camouflage

Michael was a bit distracted since he realized on the boat that he didn't have his wallet and was afraid he had lost it on the island.  However, all was well as it was actually tucked into the safe back in the cabin.

Tonight was "Bush Tucker" night at the poolside grill.  Sounded good to us for a more casual evening and we wanted to try the crocodile stew - tasted like chicken - and the kangaroo burger - tasted like beef.  There was also a bloomin' onion, which was good because it wasn't as greasy as those at Outback Steakhouse.  After dinner we returned to the cabin to order popcorn from room service and watch the movie "It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood" in our bathrobes.  Perfect.
