March 5 - At Sea

Although the alarm went off at our usual 6 am, we decided to take a day off and rolled over for some more sleep.  The Coffee Connection was very quiet when we got there around 8:00 am.  The lecture was about the fall of the British Empire by Terry Bishop.  He can certainly pack a lot into 45 minutes!

I had another massage today which was wonderful again.  Not sure why, but she went for a bit over 60 minutes, although it was booked for 50 minutes.  No complaints from me.

We are creeping along at about 10 knots on our way to the next port.  And when we look at the map of our travel on the TV, we see that we did a big loop after leaving Burnie.  It's just across the Bass Strait about 350 miles, but due to scheduling, we have to take it slowly.  To Tasmanians (aka Tassies), the island of Australia is known as the "mainland" and it's "just across the pond".  And to New Zealanders, Australia is also just across the pond.   The weather has definitely turned colder.  It's currently 65 degrees and mostly raining.  Those jackets Regent gave us certainly will be handy for this part of the cruise.

The afternoon lecture was about natural disasters and how they have been viewed and explained by long ago civilizations.  It was very interesting to learn that many cultures had a story about floods that have many of the same features as Noah and the Ark - the flood being a punishment for human behavior, one central family, bringing animals on board a raft or boat, and landing on a mountain.

Tonight was the "block party" for this segment.  Our end of the hall was too quiet so we wandered back where there were more people.  It was quite raucous and fun.  The guest entertainers are housed in our area so we met the comedian from last night, Danny Elliot, and the fellow who plays all those instruments.  It was interesting to chat with them.

We ate at a sharing table in Compass Rose and were seated with Lee and Deborah from Sacramento.  We hadn't eaten with them one on one, so it was nice to get to know them a bit better.  Didn't make it to the show, a ship's cast production called Tuxedo.
